Choosing the Right Pixel Pitch: An 8mm LED Screen Cost Analysis

Most LED buying mistakes are not specification mistakes. They are pitch mistakes — buying more resolution than the audience can perceive, or too little to satisfy the client. This article walks through the arithmetic that determines whether the ASE8 outdoor LED display is the right choice, using the rules installers actually apply on site.

The Viewing Distance Rule

The industry rule of thumb: minimum comfortable viewing distance (meters) ≈ pixel pitch (mm). At 8mm pitch, that puts the near limit at about 8 meters — comfortably inside a parking lot, a road shoulder, or a plaza.

Two refinements matter in practice:

  • Moving audiences (drivers, pedestrians crossing) tolerate coarser pitch — the eye has less time to resolve detail. P8 is generous for a roadside site.
  • Text-heavy content needs roughly 1.5× the pitch number in meters for crisp letterforms. At P8, that means 12 meters for small copy — still well within a billboard’s audience zone.

The Cost Side of the Equation

LED cost scales with pixel count. Per square meter:

Pitch Pixels per m² Relative LED count
P4 ~62,500 ~4.3×
P6 ~27,800 ~1.9×
P8 15,625 1×
P10 10,000 0.64×

For a 46 m² billboard, moving from P6 to P8 removes roughly half the diodes. That saving usually pays for the steel structure, the installation crew, and a spare cabinet — the three line items that quietly blow small budgets.

Moving from P8 down to P10 saves a further third, but at the cost of legibility in the 8–15 meter band: exactly where pedestrians and slow traffic sit. For urban sites, P8 is the floor.

What You Get Above the Pitch Number

Pitch is only the first column of the datasheet. The rest of the ASE8’s specification is what turns a cheap panel into a ten-year asset:

  • >5000 nits — real daylight headroom, not a best-case laboratory figure
  • 1920Hz refresh — clean on camera; every passer-by with a phone is a broadcaster
  • 1/5 scan — moderate current per LED, cooler cabinet, slower lumen decay
  • Novastar control — the industry-standard platform, serviceable anywhere
  • Muen power supplies — volume-proven units, widely stocked

Total Cost of Ownership, Not Purchase Price

Three numbers decide whether a screen was a good buy:

  1. Price per square meter — where P8 wins decisively over P4/P6
  2. Power per square meter per year — where 1/5 scan and conservative drive design compound
  3. Service cost per incident — where rear service and standard Novastar modules cut labor hours dramatically

A screen that costs 30% less to buy but needs a lift for every repair can easily cost more by year five. The ASE8 is specified so that all three numbers stay low at once.

The Decision Shortcut

Ask one question: how far away is my closest viewer, and how long do they look?

  • Under 6 meters, dwelling → P4 or finer
  • 6–12 meters, engaged → P6
  • 8–100 meters, passing → P8
  • Beyond 60 meters only → P10

If the answer lands in the third row, the ASE8 product page has the full specification, drawings and configuration options you need to quote the job.
